Zweigen Kanazawa unveil 2026-27 kit: Kaga Temari motif and cultural identity strategy

Before the new season began, Japanese football had one of its most pleasant stories of the year. Zweigen Kanazawa, a J2 club, unveiled their 2026-27 playing kit inspired by Kaga Temari, the traditional thread-ball craft of the Kaga region in Ishikawa Prefecture. The new season is historic for Japanese football as the J.League switches to an autumn–spring calendar, running from late summer 2026 to spring 2027. Zweigen Kanazawa chose the motif of Kaga Temari, historically a protective amulet, to represent shielding, unity and local identity. The design also incorporates a 'Z' formed by interlocking arms, symbolizing teammates protecting each other. The club has used continuous uniform concepts since 2026: symbol, connect, create, dream, enjoy, and for 2026, nurture. Uniform researcher Tomo-san praised the design as beautiful and well integrated. Beyond aesthetics, the kit is a commercial and branding strategy. A mid-tier J2 club with limited resources can use local cultural heritage to stand out. The longer 2026-27 season also gives more time to sell merchandise. However, the kit alone will not change results; the real challenge remains performance on the pitch.
